Education, experience and the ability to relate to parents creates the foundation for success. Many parents have taken their child to a psychologist, thinking this is what our family needs. Yet when they arrive to see a person in their 60’s peering down their spectacles with PhD's and certificates covering the walls, something doesn't click. This person has no idea or has completely forgotten what it feels like to work a 10 hour day, come home to diapers, formula, tantrums and endless requests for Dora. Their lack of ability to relate delays or prevents a connection from forming between parent and practitioner.
Education does not equate to experience, particularly when working with parents, children and family dynamics. The successful solutions, creative ideas and practical tools you're looking for are not found in textbooks or research articles. My background includes having my Masters Degree from Boston University (Education), several years working in the field doing in home family therapy with all types of families (experience), and I am a proud Mom to 2 young boys,(ability to relate).
